Life in the time of the coronavirus disease pandemic has been unlike anything most of us have ever experienced. Between the unfamiliarity of life while social distancing and the uncertainty of what the future holds, we all have experienced some degree of loss and struggle over the past few weeks.

But, as always, us humans are good at adapting to the unfamiliar and fighting for what we believe in.

Kelley-Ross Pharmacy Group is committed to protecting the health of our patients and staff while maintaining access to pharmacy services during the COIVD-19 outbreak. It is through this commitment to our community that we have found creative ways to adapt to these unprecedented circumstances.

We are proud to report that all our locations are open and fully functional with some creative twists to maintain guidelines of social distancing to do our part to flatten the curve:

Prescription pick up or delivery:

Our teams are limiting foot traffic inside all our pharmacy locations and offering curbside pickup, delivery, and mailing of prescriptions.

To support social distancing, all mail and delivery fees have been waived at this time.

If you are receiving a new medication, a pharmacist will call you to discuss details about your new medication such as how to take it and what you can expect.

Please call us for more specific information on how we can get your prescription to you while keeping you healthy.

PrEP Clinic:

We have fully converted our PrEP clinic to telehealth!

PrEP is an extremely important tool to prevent HIV even when social contact is low. If you are considering discontinuing, it is as important to keep taking PrEP continuously until you have a chance to discuss this with your provider. Please call us and to talk to one of our PrEP providers for more information to keep you healthy.

If you have an appointment coming up or are interesting in starting PrEP please call our PrEP clinic at 206-324-6990 or visit our website for more information.

Travel Clinic:

While travel limitations have significantly decreased the need for individual travel consultations, we are still available to provide information on travel medicine and vaccines.

Email us at travel@kelley-ross.com with your questions or inquires.

In home medication coaching:

While we are no longer able to meet in your home through our Senior Drug Education program, we are available over the phone to answer all medication and healthcare questions you may have.

Call our friendly pharmacists at 206-838-4587 or email krcpi@kelley-ross.com with your questions.

Naloxone:

Our pharmacists continue to be able to supply naloxone to anyone who requests it during this time.

Call 206-324-6990 or your specific Kelley-Ross pharmacy branch or visit our website for more information and to request naloxone and training today.

Immunizations:

The CDC has recommended postponing most immunizations except when there is a compelling need to receive the immunization based on assessment that potential benefit outweighs the risk of exposure to the virus that causes COVD-19.

If you are due for a vaccine, please call our pharmacists at 206-324-6990 or email krcpi@kelley-ross.com to discuss if your vaccine should be postponed.

While times are uncertain and changes are fluid, we remain committed to providing health care to our patients old and new. Things will change, and we will roll with the punches. We plan to adapt day by day to continue to serve our community so we can all come out of this whole and well.

Please reach out to us for any need.

Most parents know the vaccines their children need in early childhood and early adolescence, but many are unaware their college-age children need immunizations, too. Before you send your kids off to campus, make sure you have made an appointment with their doctor to get the vaccines that will keep them safe in this new stage of life.

Meningococcal Vaccines

While meningitis is rare, meningococcal vaccines may prove to be a lifesaver for your teen. The bacterial illness is spread through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions (saliva or spit), especially where people live in close quarters like college dormitories. This makes college students—and all teens and young adults ages 16 through 23 years old—one of the groups most at risk for the dangerous, fast-acting, and potentially deadly disease.

According to the United States Centers for Disease and Control (CDC), approximately 600-1000 people in the United States get meningococcal disease each year. Between 10-15 percent of the people who develop the disease will die, and 11-19 percent of the survivors will have long-term disabilities, such as loss of limbs, deafness, nervous system problems or brain damage.

The CDC recommends all preteens and teens should get vaccinated against meningitis. At 11-12 years old, kids should receive one dose of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine that helps protect against four types (serogroups) of the bacteria: A, C, W and Y. Teens should then again get a booster dose when they are 16 years old to continue having protection during the higher-risk years. If your child is ready to head off to college and hasn’t yet been vaccinated, experts recommend they get a dose as soon as possible to give the vaccine at least a month to become effective.

You may also choose to have your child vaccinated with the relatively new serogroup B meningococcal vaccine that protects against the particularly deadly meningitis B form of the disease.

Many colleges and universities now require meningococcal conjugate vaccine, and some even ask for proof of the meningitis B vaccine. Information on state requirements for public and private institutions is available through the Immunization Action Coalition, and should be also provided by your child’s school. The National Meningitis Association also offers a state by state map of requirements.

In Washington State, the law requires public and private degree-granting colleges to provide information on meningococcal disease to each enrolled first-time student if the college offers on-campus or group housing, and community and technical colleges to do so for only students who are offered housing. There is no vaccination requirement.

HPV Vaccine

The sexually transmitted infection human papillomavirus, or HPV, is so common that nearly all sexually active men and women get it at some point in their lives, even if they don’t know it. HPV can cause cervical, vaginal and vulvar cancers in women and penile cancer in men, as well as anal cancer, throat cancer and genital

warts in both sexes.

The HPV vaccine is CDC recommended for preteen boys and girls at ages 11-12 so they are protected before ever being exposed to the virus. That said, only 60 percent of girls and 41.7 percent of boys aged 13-17 years have received 1 or more doses of the vaccine. If your teen hasn’t gotten the vaccine yet, talk to their doctor as soon as possible–it may just be the protection they need from life-threatening cancers later in life.

Flu Vaccine

About 1 in 4 college students get the flu every year, causing illness, academic disruptions and in some cases, fatal complications. According to the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), part of the problem is college-aged kids don’t see their health as vulnerable. Thus, it’s a great idea for parents to send their kids off to school already protected. Flu shots are easily and conveniently available from most doctors and pharmacies.

For a complete list of recommended vaccines and immunization schedules, visit the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) website. Information on immunization requirements and laws for Washington State college students are available on the Washington State Department of Health website. Some specific programs in health sciences may have additional requirements. You may also want to consult a pharmacist and your child’s doctor for specific recommendations, especially if your child has unique health challenges.

Immunizations have had an enormous impact on improving our health, and they’re one of the best ways parents can protect their children. Ask a pharmacist or medical care provider today about immunizing your child for a safe and healthy experience in college and beyond.

‘APhA Pinnacle Award’ Acceptance Speech
Ryan Oftebro
APhA Headquarters, Washington DC
September 19, 2016

“On behalf of everyone at Kelley-Ross, I would like to thank the APhA Foundation for this incredible award. It is an honor and privilege to be here representing our team for the recognition of their amazing work. I shared with our staff, that this is the highest award in our profession, and it’s so meaningful to me, because it is acknowledging the body of work of our diverse practice and incredible people.

I have the amazing good fortune of being able to get up every day and do something that not only do I enjoy, but something that is meaningful. And most importantly, I get to do it with people I love.

I would like to start by recognizing some of our incredible community partners. We have been very fortunate to have developed wonderful relationships with people and organizations in the Seattle region. Their collaboration has made this work possible.

Virginia Mason Medical Center

The Washington State Pharmacy Association

The University of Washington Alcohol and Drug Abuse Institute

King County Public Health

Seattle Aging and Disabilities

The University of Washington School of Pharmacy

All the providers that have supported our Collaborative Drug Therapy Agreements

These are just a few of our partners that have supported and collaborated with us because they understood the value that Kelley-Ross can provide to the healthcare team, and we are grateful for their trust.

Kelley-Ross is a special place. Our pharmacy has been serving Seattle since 1925. I have literally grown up here. My father, John, owned the practice since 1973. He has been my friend, mentor and business partner, and he is the enduring spirit behind our culture. He taught me to surround yourself with good people, then get out of their way.

And we have attracted some truly amazing people. From my partners, to our leadership team, pharmacists, residents and amazing support staff; they are the best in the business. I am grateful for their faith in our vision, their courage to get out of their comfort zones, and their continuous drive to do the right thing for our patients and partners.

We are all very excited about the future at Kelley-Ross. Thanks to the hard work of our Pharmacy Community, Provider Status in Washington State is a reality. Beginning Jan 1, 2017, Community Pharmacists will finally be able to become credentialed with payers and participate in delivering high quality, collaborative care. In fact, we are already partnering with plans that are seeing the value in our work. It’s going to be much harder than anticipated, but Kelley-Ross, like the rest of the pharmacy community, is prepared for the challenge and we eagerly look forward to the future.

Thank you”.
